Cuffe & Douglass: A Reckoning of Activism

2 PM - Gallery X, 169 William Street, New Bedford: THEME: “Paul Cuffe and Frederick Douglass: A Reckoning of Activism"
Cuffe and Douglass are arguably two of the greatest Black Americans of their time — Paul Cuffe was probably the most prolific letter writer of his day for a man of color; Frederick Douglass, the most photographed man in the country. Two giants: yet, Douglass is remembered famously in history as a champion orator and passionate abolitionist, while Cuffe, the wealthiest man of color of his day, is little known and under-appreciated. Why? Moderator: Joseph Thomas, publisher of Spinner Publications
Panel: Lamont Thomas, author of "Rise to be a People: A Biography of Paul Cuffe" and Spinner's forthcoming biography, "Black Navigator: Paul Cuffe's Atlantic World."
Lee Blake, President of New Bedford Historical Society, Cuffe descendant

Improvisation, or improv, is a spontaneous, entertaining and fun form of live theater in which the plot, characters and dialogue of a game, scene or story are made up in the moment. Often improvisers will take a suggestion from the audience or draw on some other source of inspiration to start. For example, improvisers may begin a scene with a single line or with an everyday object like a broom or dish towel. Of course, the excitement and fun about an improvised scene is that participants never know where it is going! Audience participation is encouraged but not required. $15

10:30 AM - Mattapoisett Wellness Center, 76 County Road, Mattapoisett: Get that creative energy flowing! Whether an accomplished or aspiring artist, sometimes one just feels uninspired. The Marion Art Center partners with the Mattapoisett Wellness Center to help unlock creativity through yoga and Reiki. In these two one-hour workshops, led by long-time yoga teacher and Reiki practitioner Jennifer Risio, you will learn first-hand the benefits both practices provide: stress reduction, quieting the mind, strengthening the body. With yoga, movement is combined with breathing exercises to help move stagnant energy. Reiki and yoga both enhance the body’s chakras or energy centers. When body, mind, and spirit are invigorated and unified, creativity can fully blossom. Sign up for one or for both workshops! $18 per workshop
